Copenhagen’s annual festival of lights which takes place in and around the city of Copenhagen. See installations from Danish and International artists on buildings and take a boat tour to see wonderful light displays in the water! Take a guided tour or get the festival map and tour them on your own!

Arts - museums, local galleries

Copenhagen is full of art, whether it’s in one of the larger, state run museums, or a local gallery. Experience art from another culture, learn about a Danish artist, attend talks, see films, or get a history lesson. Buy a membership and take a friend!

British artist Tacita Dean’s film Antigone, 2018 named her film after her older sister and is based on the Greek tragedy by Sophocles, from 440 BCE. The film was captured on 35mm film and is part of the cinematographer's style, using no digital applications to create or produce her works. Present-day Syria was an ancient oasis city. Sculptures, paintings, and artifacts from the Roman Empire, set on a scene by Danish designer Anne Schnettler and graphic designer Nanna Arnfred. Bringing it all together with a soundscape designed by award-winning sound designer Peter Albrechtsen and film director sun Hee Engelstoft.

This exhibition began on January 23rd and will continue until the 17th of May, 2020. Mixing science with art, the Belgian artist Ann Veronica Janssens works with light effects, mists, color trails and reflective optical illusions and invites you to see her work and discover with her as she experiments with light. Feminist trailblazer and 60’s activist again the Vietnam War, Nancy Spero’s work reflects the political oppression, racism, hegemony and other power structures in the world. Her works are on paper as she moves between painting, collage, and installations.

‘Generation Wealth’ is a photographic series reflecting the world’s obsession with beauty and wealth and highlights the super-wealthy 1%. Documented by photographer and documentarist, Lauren Greenfield (US) the exhibition looks at 25 years of consumerism and the culture behind it.

Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbão’s work reflects Mexico’s architectural history and culture and how her home country having little resources makes the most of its resources.

If you’re fascinated by Nordic design principles, you’re in luck! Denmark is known for its contributions to the design world from our own Jakob Wagner, to firms like HAY. There are plenty of upcoming talents creating about the city making it a goldmine for new concepts.

Though this event is in another region of Denmark, I feel it important to Danish design as it is a fair that showcases a great deal of Danish design and interior brands that you should know about. At this annual event that’s been going on for 35 years, you’ll have the chance to participate in talks, debates, and other activities. If anything, browse the formland website for names and then have at keeping up on who’s making their mark in Denmark’s design community!

Finders Keepers

This is an event that the wonderful team at HAY shared with me and in turn, I will share with you. Finders Keepers is an annual event in Copenhagen (Saturday, March 7th - Sunday, March 8th, 2020) showcasing Danish designers. Ticket prices vary as you can choose from a Day, Early-bird, or weekend ticket.

A staple of the Copenhagen cocktail scene, RUBY is known for its quality cocktails. Whatsmore, this cocktail bar location goes far back as the 17th century when it was a popular location for fishermen to drink after a long hard day of work, as well as a book press and a bank, and even is the founding location to the Danish Spirits Producers, in 1882.

Themed after the speakeasies in the US during the prohibition ’20s and ’30s with jazz, swing, and blues music in the air. Here’s another Copenhagen cocktail bar with an intriguing history of gangsters and pubs since the Second World War. Come have a drink created by one of Denmark’s top bartenders, Humberto Marques, from Portugal.

It seats 16 and the staff prides itself on its sustainable practices like natural, organic, biodynamic food that is locally sourced. They don’t serve meat, but fish and of course wine - does Jesus work here? La Banchina’s sustainable practices don’t stop with the food and therefore include their staff and the vendors they work with. Drinks and snacks are available outside of kitchen hours.

Vinter Jazz Festival 2020

If you’re a jazz fan or enjoy the cozy setting of a jazz scene, then check out the list of amazing shows going on in Copenhagen and around Denmark!

Since 1979, the Copenhagen Jazz Festival has become a staple in summer festivals about Copenhagen and known to the world as a jazz hot-spot. Every February since 2001 the Vinter Jazz Festival takes place throughout Denmark showcasing local and international jazz talents from around the globe.
