The source of that superstition lays in China, and as always, the fault lies in grammar. In the Chinese language, to say ‘giving a clock’ (送钟 sòng zhōng /song jong/) will sound precisely like the Chinese words for 'attending a funeral ritual' (送终 sòng zhōng). Thus it is bad luck to gift watches, or any other time-measuring instrument, as it resembles nearness of death. However, different parts of the world have different traditions.
