What's the Point of a Chronograph Watch?

Let's first define what a chronograph watch is. In simple terms, chronograph watches combine the features of a stopwatch and a regular display watch. However, it can get more complicated than that. Some chronographs include a tachymeter, a scale used to measure speed and distance. Besides the tachymeter, one other popular chronograph function consists of the sub-dial to measure a specific unit of time, like seconds, minutes, an hour, or even a tenth of a second.

As you can imagine, the flexibility within chronograph movements creates a wide range of designs to choose from, and no two chronographs are alike. That is why it is essential to consider what kind of functionality you would like your chronograph watch to have and how this unique watch will fit your personal style and taste.

Our Chronograph Watch Design

Chronograph watches have always been considered 'tool watches' used to track time and measure speed and distance with the built-in tachymeter. The Pioneer Chronograph by Nordgreen is that and much more. The idea was to combine the practicality of the chronograph function with the modern and minimalistic Danish design. That way, you can use your watch to tell elapsed time and do so in style. For example, if you're looking for a black on black men's watch, the Pioneer model comes in that stunning color combination.

Striking in its simplistic design, the Pioneer's makeup consists of a minute and second dial, a stainless steel case, domed sapphire glass, and our signature Japanese quartz movement. Make the Pioneer your own when you choose between three dial colors - blue, black, and white, as well as our three case colors - gunmetal, silver men's watches, and rose gold. Our chronograph movement is the Japanese Miyota quartz movement, considered one of the best in the industry. If you're looking for cheap automatic watches, consider the Pioneer as a great and reliable alternative.

The Pioneer Chronograph is an example of classic chronometer watches executed in a modern, sustainable way. The Pioneer Chronograph watch includes a minute and second dial, and a stopwatch function, as well as a small calendar dial to show the current date. Let's take a closer look at the chronograph watch design and the location of each feature on the watch dial:

  • Just under the 12 o'clock mark on the face of the watch, we have our minimalistic Nordgreen Copenhagen logo.
  • The Pioneer Chronograph watch also features two sub dials, to measure seconds and minutes.
  • At the bottom of the dial, right above the 6 o'clock mark, there is a small calendar display to ensure you know exactly what the date is.
  • On the right-hand side of the watch, next to the 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock marks, are two stop-start buttons used to control the chronograph functions, for example, to reset/stop/start the chronograph, or to start counting the seconds on your stopwatch.

What are the 3 dials on a watch?

If you are looking at a watch with 3 dials, you will likely look at a chronograph watch. One other way to tell if it's a chronograph movement is to look at the right side of the dial, where you can usually find a button at the 2 o'clock mark, and a button at the 4 o'clock mark. The pusher buttons are used to start, stop and reset the various features of a chronograph watch, whether it's a tachymeter or a stopwatch.

The exact use of each of the 3 dials will depend on the watch model and brand. Some chronograph watches have a tachymeter scale as one of the dials, and an hour dial as the other. A chronograph by a different brand can, for example, have the tachymeter placed as a rotating mechanism at the bezel of the watch, leaving the two small dials inside for other functions, such as a stopwatch to measure how many seconds elapsed.

Nordgreen's Pioneer Chronograph watches feature a stopwatch, and two subdials to measure seconds and minutes elapsed. We have also included a date dial at the bottom for your convenience. Availability options are the blue dial watches, black dial and white dial for the Pioneer.

The 24-hour dial

The 24-hour dial is a neat feature of many chronographs used to tell time using the 24-hour format. The use of this dial is multi-faceted. It has historically been used by explorers located in places where they couldn't rely on the sun's movements to tell the time of day. How would you know if it's 4 o'clock in the morning or 4 o'clock in the evening in the North Pole during summer when the sun shines for 24 hours a day?

Is a chronograph watch formal?

Like with any other watch, we have to look not only at the function but also at the style and design of the watch to determine which occasion it is best suited for. In the case of all Nordgreen's watches, you can change the look of a watch by switching out the interchangeable straps.

For example, the Pioneer chronograph worn with a black leather strap is perfect as a formal watch for men. Whereas if you choose to go with a nylon or rubber strap, the watch takes on a more relaxed, informal, and sporty look, and makes for a great hiking watch. The watch's 5 ATM waterproof rating makes this a perfect fireman watch as well.

The Pioneer chronograph was designed with not only the chronograph function but also the look in mind. The stop/start and reset pusher button on the right-hand side has an understated minimal form, and the watch dial comes in 4 color variations (silver, gold, rose gold, and gunmetal) to suit your personal style. When you also consider the countless interchangeable straps we offer, you see that you can wear one watch for any occasion, whether it is formal or not. For example, the Pioneer Chronograph makes for a perfect pilot watch under $500 due to its functionality and classy design.

To answer your question, a chronograph is not inherently formal, but no two chronographs are the same. Some designs are more robust and look bulky on the hand, while others like the Pioneer Chronograph are more minimal.

How to use a tachymeter?

As mentioned previously, some chronographs have a tachymeter as a dial option. Described in plain words, the tachymeter scale is used to convert time passed in seconds per unit to the speed in units per hour with the press of a pusher button. Most chronograph tachymeters can measure up to 60 seconds/one minute. The basic instructions for measuring speed are as follows:

  • Know the distance between two points of interest in the unit of measurement your watch is made for
  • Start the chronograph by pushing the dedicated pusher button when you pass the first distance point
  • Pause the chronograph when you pass the second point
  • See where the second hand falls and align it with the tachymeter scale
  • The number on the tachymeter scale is your speed in miles per hour or kilometers per hour, depending on the exact features of your watch
  • Use the reset pusher button to reset the tachymeter, and it's ready to measure again!

Let's agree that the need to measure distance or speed is not an everyday necessity for many of us. This is why a chronograph in this day and age does not have to include a tachymeter. With the widespread use of smartphones, a tachymeter in a chronograph is mostly used by pilots, seafarers, and drivers, among other professionals.

If having a tachymeter in your chronograph watch is not a priority for you, and if you don't need to measure speed or distance daily, or if you only need to use the stopwatch features, then the Pioneer chronograph is a perfect choice!

Nordgreen's Danish Design Philosophy

It is time that reveals the staying power of our efforts. Nordgreen and Danish designer Jakob Wagner continue their quest to combine machine functionality with Scandinavian style. Denmark's humble achievements start with the speed of a Viking ship. Developing insulin to combat diabetes, Lego for curious minds, and with the help from the wind, Denmark is a leading producer of clean energy solutions. The Pioneer Chronograph is a timepiece that stands as a testimony to the resilience of Danish innovation.

Design Elements

Design elements are the building blocks of visual communication, essential for creating attractive and effective designs. From color and typography to layout and space, these elements play a crucial role in conveying a message and captivating the audience. Understanding the fundamentals of design elements is essential for designers to create compelling and impactful visual content. In this article, we will explore the key design elements and their importance in creating eye-catching and memorable designs. Whether you are a graphic designer, web designer, or simply interested in improving your visual communication skills, understanding the principles of design elements is essential for creating visually appealing and successful designs.

Case and Bezel

The new Speedtimer features a stainless steel case with a sleek black hard coating, giving it a modern and sophisticated look. This color scheme is inspired by the original stopwatch of 1972, paying homage to the brand's heritage. The bezel is also coated in black, creating a seamless and striking appearance.

The matte, sandblasted black dial is designed for optimal legibility, with contrasting red indexes and a prominent chronograph sub-dial at 9 o'clock. These features enhance readability and add a pop of color to the overall design.

Additional features of the case and bezel include a smooth and sturdy finish, as well as a scratch-resistant coating for durability. The bezel is also designed for easy grip and smooth rotation, adding to the functionality of the watch.

The timepiece boasts a water resistance of up to 100 meters, making it suitable for everyday wear and outdoor activities. It also offers a power reserve of 48 hours, ensuring reliable performance over an extended period.

In summary, the Speedtimer's stainless steel case with black hard coating, red indexes, and chronograph sub-dial, combined with its water resistance and power reserve, make it a stylish and functional timepiece for any occasion.

Dial and Hands

The design elements of the dial and hands for the new Speedtimer watch draw inspiration from the classic racing chronographs of the 1960s. The color scheme is a combination of white dial watches and blue watch face, with contrasting indexes and sub-dials for enhanced legibility. The hands are in a bold, contrasting color to the dial, ensuring easy reading at a glance. A 12-hour counter and minute hands are strategically placed for precise timekeeping during races.

To reduce light reflection, the case coating is matte, preventing any glare that may obstruct the view of the dial. These design elements contribute to enhanced legibility, especially in bright, outdoor settings.

The significance of the dial and hands to the overall aesthetic and functionality of the watch cannot be overstated. The historical inspiration not only adds a sense of vintage charm but also speaks to the watch's reliability and precision. The color scheme and indexes contribute to easy reading, while the placement of sub-dials and hands ensures accurate timekeeping, making the Speedtimer not just a stylish timepiece, but a reliable tool for racing professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Movement Features

When it comes to movement features, there are specific aspects to consider that play a critical role in a variety of fields and activities. Movement features encompass a range of factors that influence how people, animals, or objects move and interact with their environment. These aspects include speed, agility, coordination, flexibility, and balance, among others. Whether it's in sports, dance, therapy, or robotics, understanding and analyzing movement features is essential for performance optimization, injury prevention, and functional movement. In this article, we will explore the different components of movement features and how they impact various areas of our lives.

Automated Movement

Automated movement refers to the mechanism that allows a watch to function without the need for manual winding. There are two main types of automated movements in watches: automatic and quartz. Automatic movements rely on the natural motion of the wearer's arm to create energy, which is then transferred to the watch's mainspring, while quartz movements use a battery to power the watch which are easily replaced. The significance of self-winding mechanisms in watch technology lies in their ability to eliminate the need for a battery, making them more environmentally friendly and convenient for the wearer.

Watch enthusiasts often prefer automated movements over quartz movements because of their craftsmanship and tradition. In addition, automated movements are often favored for their reliability and durability. Premium Japan made movements, in particular, are known for their precision and ability to stand the test of time. These movements are meticulously crafted and engineered, promising long-lasting performance and accuracy. Overall, the automated movement is a timeless and sought-after feature in the world of watchmaking.

Flyback Chronograph Functionality

Flyback chronographs are a type of chronograph watch that allows the user to quickly reset and restart the stopwatch function with a single push of a button. This functionality is particularly useful in activities such as aviation and racing, where split-second timing is crucial. The history of flyback chronographs dates back to the early 20th century, with the first patented design by Longines in 1936.

Key features of flyback chronographs include the quick reset ability, which differentiates them from traditional chronographs, and the use of in-house movements, which are designed and manufactured by the watchmaker itself. The distinctive star-shaped column wheel is a mechanical component that controls the start, stop, and reset functions of the chronograph with precision. The tachymeter scale is often placed on the tricompax dial, allowing for easy measurement of speed over a known distance.

The Frederique Constant Flyback Chronograph Manufacture is a notable example of this type of watch, featuring a Swiss-built movement and a refined aesthetic. With its in-house FC-760 calibre movement, this timepiece showcases the expert craftsmanship and attention to detail that are synonymous with the brand.

Overall, flyback chronographs combine historical significance, practical functionality, and impressive engineering, making them a sought-after choice for watch enthusiasts and professionals alike.

60-Hour Power Reserve

To optimize a watch's 60-hour power reserve, start by winding the mainspring fully until it reaches its maximum tension. This helps ensure that the watch can run for the full 60 hours without needing to be wound again. Avoid using power-draining complications like perpetual calendars or chronographs unnecessarily, as these can deplete the power reserve more quickly. When the watch is not being worn, store it in a horizontal position to keep the mainspring tension consistent. This helps prevent the mainspring from losing its tension unevenly, which can affect the watch's accuracy and power reserve. By following these steps, you can make the most of your watch's 60-hour power reserve and ensure that it runs smoothly for an extended period of time.

House Movements vs. Quartz Movements

House movements are mechanical movements that derive their power from a mainspring, which is wound either manually or through the motion of the wearer's wrist. These movements are known for their craftsmanship and intricate design, often featuring exposed gears and intricate detailing. They are often prized for their traditional appeal and the artistry involved in their construction. However, they can be less accurate than quartz movements.

On the other hand, quartz movements are powered by a battery and regulated by a tiny piece of quartz crystal. They are known for their accuracy, often losing or gaining only a few seconds per month. Quartz movements are also more resistant to shock and temperature variations, making them more reliable for everyday wear.

The key difference between the two movements lies in their power sources and accuracy. House movements rely on mechanical components and craftsmanship, while quartz movements are powered by electronic technology. The choice between the two ultimately comes down to personal preference and the wearer's priorities in terms of aesthetics, accuracy, and functionality.

Materials Used in Construction

Construction projects require a variety of materials to be used in the building process, each serving a specific purpose. From the foundation to the roof, the right materials are crucial to the overall strength, stability, and durability of the structure. In this article, we will explore the different materials used in construction, including concrete, steel, wood, and masonry. Sapphire Compared Mineral Glass

Sapphire crystal is renowned for its exceptional durability, scratch resistance, and clarity compared to mineral glass. It is second only to diamond in terms of hardness, making it highly resistant to scratches and damage. In contrast, mineral glass is more prone to scratches and may not hold up as well over time. Additionally, sapphire crystal offers greater clarity and transparency, allowing for better visibility of the watch or smartphone display.

The benefits of sapphire caseback crystal over mineral glass are particularly notable in high-end luxury watches and smartphones. The use of sapphire crystal in these products enhances their durability and scratch resistance, providing a premium and long-lasting experience for the user. In high-end luxury watches, sapphire crystal is often used for the caseback, allowing for a clear view of the intricate mechanical movements inside.

The key differences between sapphire crystal and mineral glass lie in their durability, scratch resistance, and clarity. Sapphire crystal is commonly used in high-end luxury watches and high-end smartphones, while mineral glass is more commonly found in mid-range or budget-friendly timepieces and electronic devices.
